Group Therapy

Group therapy is an excellent opportunity to experience tremendous personal growth in a supportive environment with individuals struggling with similar difficulties. Nashville Psych offers several interpersonal process groups to satisfy individuals’ needs for connection/community, support and challenge.

About Our Process Groups

While the idea of sharing your personal challenges in a group may sound overwhelming to some, group therapy can be very effective and group members are often taken aback by how much they enjoy and benefit from the experience. In fact, for certain issues, group therapy may be the preferred mode of treatment, which would provide benefits beyond that of individual therapy.

Interpersonal process groups are intended to help individuals whose issues center on relationship difficulties. Whether you have difficulty empathizing with others, demonstrating empathy, asking for support, getting support, trusting others, being trusted or depended on, trusting yourself, or resolving conflicts successfully, these groups will help you gain awareness through here-and-now interactions with peers. In contrast to support groups, such as AA or Al-Anon, “cross-talk” or feedback is highly encouraged. Here-and-now interaction, one of the most powerful aspects of therapy, allows members to have corrective emotional experiences and to receive valuable immediate feedback about their impact on others in relationships.

The climate of trust found in group therapy, the understanding that group members share many of your struggles and the constructive and supportive feedback provided by other group members will make you feel increasingly more eager to open up about your thoughts and feelings during each session. The more you collaborate and share, the more you benefit from the experience.

With the support of your group, you can naturally become more self-aware, develop better communication strategies, improve relationship skills and gain healthier coping mechanisms.

The following interpersonal process groups are currently offered:

About Our Professional Development Groups

Nashville Psych founder Dan Goldstein, PhD, says that the most nourishing and growth-promoting experiences he’s had in his career have been in interpersonal process groups with the American Academy of Psychotherapists (AAP).

AAP focuses on helping therapists learn, grow and stay “authentic human beings” in the therapy relationship. This is often accomplished through training, education and ongoing process groups in which therapists can work on their own personal growth. Goldstein is committed to developing an AAP presence in Nashville.

Stay tuned for professional development events. Dan Goldstein intends to offer such events at least semi-annually.
