Training Program

Nashville Psych (NP) is a Nashville, Tennessee-based private psychology practice offering a wide range of psychological and counseling services, including individual therapy, child therapy, couples therapy, group therapy, family therapy, career counseling, and comprehensive psychological evaluations. NP’s offices are centrally located in Hillsboro Village, in close proximity to Vanderbilt University and Downtown Nashville.

TRAINING PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The aim of NP’s training program is to better serve Nashville’s diverse populations while providing graduate students with the supervised experiences necessary to become highly-skilled and competent mental health professionals. NP accomplishes its mission by offering a combination of individual and group supervision, as well as a wide range of cases and clinical opportunities.

NP offers two tracks for student trainees: Psychotherapy and Psychological Assessment.

Both tracks are open to master’s and doctoral students in clinical and counseling psychology programs with relevant coursework in counseling theories, psychopathology, and assessment.

Psychotherapy Track

Students placed in the psychotherapy track are exposed to a variety of presenting concerns, which provides opportunities to engage in short-term, relational, and integrative psychotherapy with adolescents and adults. Students build caseloads through the initial intake process and/or transfers from outgoing student trainees. NP’s client care coordinators match clients to therapists including trainees. While the needs of NP are factored into therapist-client matches, students’ clinical areas of interest and desired areas for growth play a role in those decisions.

All students receive one hour of individual supervision per week. Supervisors provide support at NP by facilitating the development of the person-of-the-therapist, assisting in enhancing trainees’ case conceptualization skills, guiding trainees’ choices with regard to interventions, as well as approving clinical documentation. Supervision throughout the year will involve reviewing recorded sessions.

As a cohort, practicum students will participate in a monthly seminar, which includes a combination of didactics and discussion. Seminar topics are associated with the mental health field and address core competencies expected for professional development. Depending on the size of the cohort, students can participate in a weekly case consultation with NP staff, or will form a new consultation group led by senior staff.
