There are many reasons why people might consider a comprehensive psychological or diagnostic evaluation. You may have spent years in therapy while still feeling unsure about what is actually going on beneath the surface. Perhaps you have received different diagnoses from different providers, found yourself stuck in treatment that is only helping partially, or reached a point where you want a deeper and more integrated understanding of yourself before making important decisions about treatment, medication, school, work, or relationships.
At Nashville Psych, our comprehensive psychological evaluations are designed for situations where the picture feels more complex, layered, or difficult to untangle. Rather than focusing narrowly on a single diagnosis, these evaluations take a broader look at emotional functioning, personality patterns, cognitive functioning, developmental history, relationships, and life experiences in order to better understand the full context of what someone is struggling with.
A comprehensive psychological evaluation can help provide greater clarity when multiple conditions may be overlapping, when previous diagnoses have not fully explained the experience, or when someone wants a more thoughtful and nuanced understanding than a brief screening or checklist can provide.
When a Comprehensive Evaluation May Be Helpful
People often pursue comprehensive psychological testing when:
- They have a complex or unclear symptom picture and want greater diagnostic clarity.
- Different providers have offered conflicting diagnoses or recommendations.
- Therapy or medication treatment has not felt fully effective and they want a deeper assessment to guide next steps.
- Multiple concerns may be overlapping, such as ADHD, autism, trauma, anxiety, depression, personality dynamics, or executive functioning difficulties.
- They are pursuing disability accommodations and need comprehensive documentation.
- A major life, academic, or career decision is looming and they want a clearer understanding of their emotional and cognitive functioning.
- They want a more in-depth and integrated evaluation rather than a brief diagnostic screen.
What “Comprehensive” Actually Means
A comprehensive psychological evaluation goes well beyond a standard diagnostic interview. Depending on the referral concerns, the evaluation may include an extended clinical interview, cognitive testing, personality assessment, symptom-specific measures, executive functioning assessment, and screening for concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, ADHD, autism, or interpersonal and attachment-related patterns.
We also take time to understand the broader context of a person’s life, including developmental history, family dynamics, educational experiences, relationships, work functioning, stressors, and previous treatment experiences. When relevant and with consent, we may also review records or gather collateral information from family members or treatment providers to help create a more complete picture.
Rather than simply assigning diagnoses, the goal of a comprehensive evaluation is to thoughtfully integrate all of this information into a clearer understanding of how someone’s struggles developed, what may be maintaining them, and what kinds of support or treatment may genuinely help moving forward.
Why Doctoral-Level Assessment Matters
Comprehensive diagnostic evaluations require significant training in psychological assessment, test interpretation, clinical interviewing, and diagnostic formulation. Integrating personality functioning, cognitive data, developmental history, emotional patterns, and symptom presentation into a coherent and meaningful understanding of a person is a highly specialized aspect of doctoral-level psychology training.
At Nashville Psych, evaluations are conducted by licensed doctoral-level psychologists with extensive experience in psychological assessment. Our approach emphasizes depth, nuance, and thoughtful clinical integration rather than quick conclusions or overly simplistic labels.
What You Receive
Following the evaluation, you will receive a comprehensive integrated written report that thoughtfully synthesizes all findings from the assessment process. The report includes diagnostic clarification, differential diagnostic considerations, and a broader clinical formulation explaining how emotional, cognitive, developmental, relational, and personality factors may be interacting or contributing to current difficulties.
You will also receive individualized recommendations for treatment, support, accommodations, or additional evaluation when appropriate. Recommendations may include specific therapy approaches, medication consultation, executive functioning supports, academic or workplace accommodations, or other strategies tailored to your needs and goals.
The evaluation concludes with a feedback session designed to help you meaningfully understand the findings, ask questions, and discuss practical next steps in a collaborative and supportive way.
Who Conducts Comprehensive Evaluations
Comprehensive psychological evaluations at Nashville Psych are conducted by our doctoral-level psychologists, including Daniel Goldstein, Nisha Bhatt, and Jenna Lehmann.
We understand that people often seek comprehensive evaluations during periods of uncertainty, overwhelm, or frustration. Our goal is to create a process that feels thoughtful, respectful, and genuinely useful versus cold, rushed, or overly clinical.
Process & Timeline
The evaluation process typically begins with a free consultation call to discuss your concerns, answer questions, and determine whether a comprehensive psychological evaluation feels like the right fit. From there, clients participate in a clinical interview, which may last approximately 1 hours.
Testing sessions are then scheduled based on the scope and complexity of the evaluation and typically involve one to two. The process may also include collateral information gathering, record review, or coordination with current treatment providers when appropriate and with consent.
Once all assessment data has been integrated, the evaluator prepares a comprehensive written report, which is typically completed within 8–10 weeks of scheduling the first appointment. The process concludes with a feedback session to review findings, discuss recommendations, and answer questions in a collaborative and supportive way.
Fees & Insurance
Comprehensive psychological evaluations are provided on a fee-for-service basis. Because the scope of these evaluations varies depending on the referral questions and complexity involved, fees differ based on the nature of the assessment. We can provide superbills that clients may submit for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from other evaluations?
Many evaluations are focused on answering a specific diagnostic question, such as whether someone has ADHD, autism, or a learning disability. A comprehensive psychological evaluation takes a broader and more integrative approach. It is often appropriate when multiple conditions may be overlapping, when previous diagnoses have not fully explained the picture, or when someone wants a deeper understanding of themselves before making treatment or life decisions.
Will insurance cover this evaluation?
Coverage varies significantly depending on your insurance plan and the purpose of the evaluation. While comprehensive evaluations are often not fully covered as standard outpatient mental health services, many clients are able to receive partial reimbursement through out-of-network benefits.
Can I share the report with my therapist or psychiatrist?
Yes. Many clients choose to share the evaluation report with therapists, psychiatrists, physicians, schools, or other providers so that recommendations can be more thoughtfully integrated into ongoing treatment and support.
How long is the written report?
Our reports are extensive and designed to be thorough, organized, and genuinely useful rather than overly technical or difficult to understand.
