Individual Therapy in Nashville
Individual Therapy in Nashville
You do not need to be in crisis, or even know exactly what is wrong, to start therapy.
Maybe anxiety has been taking up too much space. Or you have been feeling low, overwhelmed, disconnected, or unlike yourself. You may be navigating a loss, a relationship, a major transition, or a pattern you keep finding yourself in. Or maybe nothing is obviously wrong, but you know something could feel better.
Whatever brings you here, you do not have to have it all figured out before reaching out.
At Nashville Psych, we provide individual therapy for teens, young adults, and adults in person in Nashville and online across Tennessee, and in all PSYPACT states. Our therapists take time to understand not only what you are struggling with, but who you are, what matters to you, and what you hope will be different.

What Brings Clients to Therapy
There is no single “right” reason to start therapy. People come to us with concerns that are specific and easy to name, and others that are harder to put into words.
You might be dealing with:
- Anxiety, panic, or worry that is difficult to turn off
- Depression, low mood, or a sense of feeling stuck
- ADHD, attention, or executive functioning challenges
- Stress and burnout from work, school, caregiving, or trying to hold everything together
- Trauma or experiences from the past that still affect you now
- Grief, loss, divorce, or another painful change
- Relationship or family patterns you want to understand or change
- Body image concerns
- Career stress, perfectionism, or feeling uncertain about what comes next
- Questions about identity, belonging, or how you want to live
- The feeling that you understand yourself intellectually but still keep getting caught in the same patterns
- A desire to know yourself better, feel more grounded, and make choices that feel more like your own
If one concern is taking up most of the space right now, you can learn more about our work with anxiety, social anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, and grief and loss.
Even if it’s unclear exactly what you are seeking, our job is helping you figure that out.
How We Approach Individual Therapy
Good therapy is built on a real relationship. Your therapist will take time to understand your goals, your history, your strengths, and the patterns that may be keeping you stuck. From there, they will shape the work around you, tailoring their approach to meet your specific needs.
Depending on who you see and what you are working on, therapy may draw from approaches such as:
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to better understand the relationship between thoughts, emotions, and behavior
- Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) to help you make room for difficult experiences while moving toward what matters most to you
- Psychodynamic therapy to explore longstanding patterns and understand how earlier experiences may still shape your relationships and reactions
- EMDR and trauma-focused therapy to work with earlier experiences that continue to affect you in the present
- DBT and other skills-based approaches to build emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal skills
- IFS, attachment-focused, and experiential approaches to better understand different parts of yourself and how you relate to others
- Mindfulness and somatic approaches to help you notice what is happening in your mind and body and respond with greater awareness
Our therapists integrate many of these methods to meet your unique needs. Our Client Care team can help connect you with someone whose training, style, and areas of interest fit what you are looking for.
What stays consistent is the foundation of the work: trust, respect, curiosity, and a therapist who is willing to understand you as a whole person.
What Your First Therapy Session Is Like
Your first session is a guided conversation. You can come as you are. There is no specific preparation needed.
Your therapist will usually want to understand what brought you to therapy, what has been happening recently, what you have already tried, and what you hope may be different.
They may also ask about your history, relationships, health, work or school, and other parts of your life that help provide context. You will not be expected to cover everything in one appointment.
The first session is also an opportunity for you to get a sense of your therapist and vice versa. You can ask how they work, what they think may be helpful, and what therapy might look like moving forward. It is okay to pay attention to whether you feel understood, comfortable enough to be honest, and able to imagine doing meaningful work together.
If something does not feel like the right fit, we would rather know early so we can help you find someone who may be a better match. Our client care team is there to support you.
How We Help You Find the Right Therapist
Finding the right therapist can be one of the hardest parts of starting therapy and we like to simplify the process. Our Client Care team starts with a free 15-minute consultation to learn more about what you are looking for.
We may ask about:
- What brings you to therapy
- Any preferences you have about your therapist
- The type of support or approach you are hoping for
- Whether you prefer in-person or online sessions
- Your schedule and availability
- Your budget
From there, we can suggest one or two clinicians who may be a good fit. You can also meet our full team on the therapists page. If you want help thinking through what to look for, our guide on how to find the right therapist in Nashville walks through some of the questions worth considering.
In-Person and Online Therapy
You can meet with your therapist in person at our Nashville office or online through secure telehealth anywhere in Tennessee and in all PSYPACT states.
Some clients prefer being in the room with their therapist. Others appreciate the convenience of online therapy. Depending on your clinician and circumstances, you may also be able to use a mix of both.
Our online therapy page has more information about telehealth, including how some of our psychologists are able to work with clients in participating PSYPACT states.
Fees and Insurance
Nashville Psych is an out-of-network, fee-for-service practice. Fees vary by clinician. You can find current rates on our fees page.
If your insurance plan includes out-of-network benefits, we can provide the documentation you need to submit a claim for possible reimbursement. Our Client Care team is also happy to answer questions about fees and help you understand your options before you schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a diagnosis to start therapy?
No. Many people begin therapy because something feels difficult, confusing, or out of balance without knowing exactly what to call it. You certainly do not need a diagnosis or a perfectly defined problem before you start. Part of therapy may involve understanding more clearly what is happening and what kind of support could help.
How do I know if therapy might help me?
Therapy may be worth considering if something is interfering with your quality of life, relationships, work, school, sleep, or sense of wellbeing.
You may also seek counseling because you want to understand yourself better, change a recurring pattern, work through a transition, or have a space to think more deeply about what you want.
While we are biased, we believe that just about everyone can benefit from therapy.
How do you match me with a therapist?
Our Client Care team begins with a free consultation to learn about what brings you to therapy, your preferences, schedule, whether you want to meet in person or online, and your budget.
From there, we recommend one or two clinicians whose experience and style may fit what you are looking for.
What kinds of therapy do you offer?
Our therapists use a range of approaches, including CBT, ACT, psychodynamic therapy, EMDR and trauma-focused therapy, DBT and other skills-based approaches, RLT, IFS, attachment-focused therapy, mindfulness, and experiential or somatic approaches.
The specific methods used depend on your therapist, your goals, and what seems most helpful for you.
How long does individual therapy take?
There is no set timeline. Some people come to therapy to work on a specific issue, while others want to work on longstanding patterns or deeper concerns over a longer period of time.
Your therapist will talk with you about your goals and together you will evaluate what makes the most sense for your needs.
Is therapy confidential?
In general, what you share in therapy is private and confidential. There are limited legal and ethical exceptions to confidentiality, which may involve concerns about safety or other situations required by law. Your therapist will explain those limits at the beginning of therapy and answer any questions you have.
What if my therapist does not feel like the right fit?
Please tell us. A strong working relationship with your therapist matters, and sometimes the first match is not the right one. If that happens, our Client Care team can help you explore whether another clinician at Nashville Psych (or outside of the practice) may be a better fit.
Do you offer therapy online?
Yes. We offer secure online therapy throughout Tennessee, in addition to in-person sessions at our Nashville office. Some of our psychologists can also provide telehealth to clients in participating PSYPACT states. You can learn more on our online therapy page.
How much does individual therapy cost in Nashville?
Fees vary by clinician. You can view current rates on our fees page or contact our Client Care team at (615) 582-2882 for help understanding your options.
